June 2022 Funding Our Future Update

June 30th, 2022 This month’s update starts with a tongue-twister: a freshly-formal fifth Funding Our Future focus area! That’s right, the Salt Lake City Council approved the use of Funding Our Future sales tax dollars on another important item: parks and public lands maintenance.

Housing, safety, streets and transit projects will continue to be funded by Funding Our Future sales tax revenue – and street reconstruction projects will continue to be funded by the General Obligation bond.

The 8.7 million dollar projected growth in sales tax revenue allows Salt Lake City to allocate 2 million dollars from Funding Our Future revenue to parks maintenance without taking funds dedicated to housing, safety, streets and transit.

Stay tuned for more on how parks and public lands will benefit from Funding Our Future. Read on for other June highlights.

HOUSING UPDATE

On June 11th, Salt Lake City hosted a gun buyback event. The event offered a no questions asked, no ID needed opportunity for residents to place their unwanted guns into safe hands. Of the 103 dropped off to the SLCPD, 5 had been stolen.

Mayor Erin Mendenhall announced the event on June 3rd, National Gun Violence Awareness Day, in the wake of tragedy in Uvalde, Texas. Watch the Mayor’s speech on gun violence here.

TRANSIT UPDATE

Trying something new can be intimidating – for some people, that includes riding transit. To make it easier for first-time riders, UTA offers how-to videos about riding the bus and taking TRAX.

Confusion about how to pay and cost of fare can also make taking transit more difficult. Thanks to Salt Lake City’s recently adopted budget, SLC students K-12 will have the opportunity to ride the bus for free! There are more details to come, but you can check out some basics here.

STREETS UPDATE

Salt Lake City is preparing to reconstruct yet another street thanks to Funding Our Future! 300 North between 300 and 1000 West will be revamped in 2024, with changes coming to the pavement, sidewalk, curb and gutter. ADA ramps and bike lanes will also be improved or added. The 300 North project has a dedicated newsletter and updated website. Check it out here and share some design feedback while you’re at it.
