June 2022 Funding Our Future Update

June 30th, 2022 This month’s update starts with a tongue-twister: a freshly-formal fifth Funding Our Future focus area! That’s right, the Salt Lake City Council approved the use of Funding Our Future sales tax dollars on another important item: parks and public lands maintenance.

Housing, safety, streets and transit projects will continue to be funded by Funding Our Future sales tax revenue – and street reconstruction projects will continue to be funded by the General Obligation bond.

The 8.7 million dollar projected growth in sales tax revenue allows Salt Lake City to allocate 2 million dollars from Funding Our Future revenue to parks maintenance without taking funds dedicated to housing, safety, streets and transit.

Stay tuned for more on how parks and public lands will benefit from Funding Our Future. Read on for other June highlights.

On February 24th, City leaders celebrated the renovation of Salt Lake City’s historic Jackson Apartments, for which the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City (RDA) provided a $1 million loan. This project has ensured the preservation of 80 existing affordable housing units for the City’s elderly residents making 60% or less of the area median income as well as significant upgrades to the building including the restoration of the historic façade, unit updates, and improved ADA accessibility.

Also, Salt Lake City has launched Thriving in Place; this is Salt Lake City’s community-driven process to analyze and understand gentrification and displacement. Through this work we will develop a plan of action to address the factors that are forcing many of our friends, family members and neighbors to leave, or to live without a home, because they can’t find housing here that they can afford. Learn more and take the survey here.

This month, Capital City News spoke with the new Executive Director of Salt Lake City 911, Stephen Meyer. Watch the full video including the interview here.
